My Story....
I was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario... in 2010, I moved to New Brunswick, and in 2018, life brought me to Halifax, Nova Scotia... and I fell in love with it. The people, the craggy coasts and fog banks, lush forests and lofty trees, the beaches, the coves, the lighthouses, but most of all, the people have been a joy to get to know. From the tiniest village to downtown Halifax, Nova Scotians have a warmth and a friendliness, and a care for their communities. While not alone in this, I believe the vast majority of Canadians are the same, my time here has inspired me to want to do more, to do something that matters.
There were several incidents that all happened one after the other, that made me realize that there was something I could do... during the lockdowns, I took up sewing again, and I enjoyed it very much.. I found it relaxing and gratifying to make something with my own hands that could be put to use.
At the same time, I started thinking about how many people were at home, like I was... who needed to work and couldn't... then I started thinking about all the people to whom this wasn't new... when my son was very young I myself was desperate for a work at home job that wasn't a complete scam. I fell for three of them before I realized my chances were pretty slim. I want to change that for people.
I have a relative with peripheral neuropathy in his hands, from diabetes... he burned himself cooking and didn't know, until he noticed the injury after the fact.
I myself have a tremor disorder and sometimes my hands aren't all that steady when trying to balance dishes. How many times I have almost dropped a bowl I had balanced on a plate because it was hot... I can't even tell you.
I have another relative who has a damaged right arm and issues with grip strength, so working in the kitchen and trying to keep a hold of things is challenging... I run in a pretty small circle, and even so, there was a need.
So.. here we are.
The goal: To make, and sell, handmade microwave cozies that will protect vulnerable hands. To provide satisfying, honest work from home opportunities to those to would be helped by it. To create opportunities for fundraising for national health organizations like the Cancer Society, the Diabetes Foundation and Breast Cancer Research, as well as local charities.
